Speaker engineering took a real leap forward in 1974 when Yamaha released the NS-1000M, the world's first loudspeaker to use beryllium diaphragms in its tweeter and midrange drivers. Beryllium is stiffer and lighter than the paper or plastic cones used in most speakers of the era, letting it move faster and more accurately without the resonance and distortion that heavier materials introduce at high frequencies. The NS-1000M became a fixture in recording studios as well as home systems, prized for a clarity that was genuinely different from what else was on the market.
The rest of the industry continued pushing component systems as the standard way to build a home setup, with manufacturers competing hard on power output and feature lists for receivers and amplifiers. The economic pressure from the prior year's oil crisis was still being felt, but it hadn't yet slowed the pace of genuine engineering innovation.
